On 10th December 2021, Chris Memorial School held a special event to mark the end of a successful academic year and celebrate the coming Christmas. The event started shortly after 11am and finished around 12pm.
After the opening prayer, opening address and other greetings, the little learners in creche and Nursery 1 led the way with Christmas carols like “Away in a Manager” and “Feliz Navidad.” They finished up by singing “Chrismas is coming, mummy buy shoes for me!” I hope the mummies in the audience were listening because they weren’t joking at all.
Their performance was followed by the recital of Christmas-related memory verses such as Isaiah 9:6. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
In the lead up to the event, we tried hard to help the children understand that Christmas is not about beautiful trees and snacks but rather about the birth of our lord and saviour Jesus Christ. It may take time for them to fully understand it all, but it’s never too early to start.
Next up was a short play entitled “The Wise men see Jesus.” It was based on the events of Matthew 2, where the wise men saw a star in the east and set out to find and worship the newborn king. First they arrived in Jerusalem and sought an audience with “King Herod.”
Then they made their way to Bethlehem and presented their gifts to Jesus and his parents. The children performed their parts excellently and memorized all their parts perfectly despite having less than two weeks’ notice. And luckily no one noticed that “Joseph” and King Herod’s bodyguard were one and the same…
The play was followed by a special presentation: “This Man Called Jesus.” The children taught us many attributes of Jesus including how wonderful He is and how superior He is to every other being. We pray they will continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord.
After the silver collection and congratulatory comments from the school administrator, it was time to present our graduands with their certificates and prizes. They have all worked hard and played hard this past academic year, and we wish them all the best in their new schools.
Once the certificates were distributed and the photos were taken, it was time to say the vote of thanks and the closing prayer and bring the event to a successful end. Naturally there were some refreshments, a.k.a. “Item 13” to mark the festive occasion and thank the children and parents for being with us through the year. Thank you to all who helped make it a great event. See you all next term, God willing!
